Pranayama is a yogic exercise focussed on breath: the literal meaning being extending (ayama) the prana (life). The ancient practice of pranayama, integral to the Yoga sutras of Patanjali, has been taught for thousands of years. Yogic breathing not only soothes the nervous system but also serves as a pathway to profound meditation experiences. It aids in dissolution of the mind field and thus helps one to reach a meditative state. Patanjali advises to practice self-discipline and maintain good conduct in life before even starting the other practices like asana (body posture training) and Pranayama (breath works).
